It's easier when you're surrounded in familiar faces. Like if a friend goes off to war, and you're stuck not knowing their daily fate, only able to write them letters and hope you'll receive one back.
Being out there on the front with them on the other hand... obviously it would be nice to not be out there at all, but you'd know how they're doing, and if they get into trouble, you can try to do something to help them right away.
Of course, you end up leaving your folks at home, but can't win everything.
